What is the focus of the DCPOS volunteer program?

It is our goal to actively promote a beneficial relationship between volunteers and staff that results in staff, volunteers and volunteer organizations working cooperatively to foster the stewardship of Dallas County’s preserves. The Dallas County Parks and Open Space volunteer program provides an avenue for Dallas County community members to contribute their skills and time to a variety of needs and projects throughout the program.

What kinds of volunteer projects will we be doing?

Volunteers will assist in projects that range anywhere from litter clean-ups, habitat restoration, trail maintenance and outreach (community events).

Is a background check required to volunteer?

No, a background check is not required to volunteer. Refer to the volunteer handbook to view our volunteer eligibility requirements. Email any questions or concerns to Parks.OpenSpace@dallascounty.org.

What is the youngest age that anyone can volunteer with the program?

Minors between the ages of 13-17 can volunteer with an adult present.

Can I bring my group to volunteer?

Yes, for inquiries on group events please email Parks.OpenSpace@dallascounty.org to coordinate your volunteer event.

What should I bring with me when I volunteer?

Volunteers need to be prepared for the elements. We will be working outside and can potentially be exposed to various weather patterns, working in the outdoors and handling projects that involve being dirty.

  • Closed-toed shoes (volunteers will not be allowed to participate without these)
  • Long sleeves and pants
  • Hat
  • Sunblock and bug spray
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • Gloves (Dallas County will provide, unless you want to bring your own)

Can I earn volunteer service hours for my school or corporate requirement?

Yes, volunteer hours will be recorded. This is especially helpful for students needing volunteer service hours or employees participating in corporate volunteer programs. Be sure to check in with staff at the beginning and end of the event to verify.

Do I need prior experience to volunteer?

No prior experience is necessary. We provide guidance and instructions for all activities, making these volunteer opportunities in Dallas accessible to beginners and experienced volunteers alike.

What happens if there is bad weather?

Some events may be rescheduled due to severe weather conditions. Volunteers will be notified in advance if there are any changes. Also, keep an eye on our social media pages where we will also post updates.
